DJs

Anastasia Pomogaeva (Moscow, Russia)

Anastasia became a DJ more then 5 years ago, because it’s better for her to sit with nice and favorite music then dance with any music she doesn’t like. She is a permanent DJ on tango festivals in Saint-Petersburg and Moscow, though there are no differences for her in DJing on either big festivals or small milongas. Because the main point on milonga is people, but not the number of people on milonga.

Anastasia have been conducting seminar-training for “those who want to become a tango-DJ” for last two years in Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Samara, Kiev and Riga. But she prefers practical work as a DJ and communicating with dance floor.

“If milonga goes fine then the DJ’s work is not visible, if milonga goes bad then it is DJ’s fault. The DJ is always wrong. If more then one third of people on milonga is not dancing, then something goes wrong in DJ’s work”. This idea is taken from one American friend and colleague as well as another rule: “Just don’t put the bad music". These ideas help Anastasia to make a small festival or even big miracle on every milonga.

Bärbel Rücker (Copenhagen, Denmark)

www.tanzbar.dk

DJ Bärbel Rücker | Tanzbar is an experienced DJ who has performed full evening music sets at Tango marathons, festivals, and milongas in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Italy, France, Portugal, Germany, Slovenia, Switzerland and Hungary. She lives and teaches in Copenhagen.

Bärbel’s Tango DJ’ing approach includes songs mostly from the late 1920’s, 1930’s and 1940’s. Always striving for an inspiring atmosphere, and to maintain effortless flow on the dance floor, Bärbel’s style is at once romantic, rhythmical, playful, and full of surprises. Her ability to adapt her selection of music to the multiple elements that make up a particular milonga is an aspect of Bärbel’s individual style which has become her unique signature.

Viacheslav Ivanov (Moscow, Russia)

www.gotango.ru

Viacheslav about himself:
"I have started collecting tango-music since I began to dance 10 years ago. During this time I have changed my music preferences several times, and I am not sure, these were the final changes. However, I am telling everyone for about 5 years by now that my favorite orchestra is Carlos di Sarli - and I am not acting against my conscience in this case. I like DJ-ing. I like sharing my mood with others, sharing what I like. I think that every DJ plays in the first place the music he likes! I myself like tango music very much, but at times would not mind playing something else, when I feel that it will fit.
There are two opinions:
1. DJ's role is to be a "pastor", to lead (teach, bring up etc.)
2. DJ is an attendant. He should make all dancers (coming to milonga this night) "feel good".:)
I agree with both.:)
I think that a good DJ is the one who can keep a right balance. A DJ by himself can create an ambience at a milonga, but he is the necessary part of it. And then, let there be "Weightlessness in the dance" and "Sevenths heaven" on the dance floor.":)

Mik Avramenko (Kiev, Ukraine)

Mik’s role as a DJ on milonga is to raise and keep good the spirits of each dancer. He uses all variety of “Golden Age” music for that. Mik combines music harmoniously and creates the milonga atmosphere to make people dancing within the whole milonga until La Cumparsita’s final chord.

Within last 3 years Mik is a popular DJ on milongas in Kiev as well as on festivals in Dnipropetrovsk (Industrial Tango Exchange - 2010, Tango Harmony Festival - 2011), Lviv (Tango Remolino - 2010, 2011), Odessa (Tango Embrace - 2009, Tango D'Amore - 2010).
